The practice of slow living

The practice of slow living

Something I've been practicing for quite some years now, is the art of living your life every day as if it were your last.

In society we're taught to remember daily what happened in the past and we're also being forced into thinking about our next step(s). The plans we have for our future determine big part of our daily life, because we mostly worry about WHAT we're going to do and HOW we're going to do that.

This next step in your life can be consuming so much energy that you forget to actually enjoy the present moment, which is what I've personally been struggling with for most of my life.

Very slowly I've been accepting this daily struggle and have been practicing letting go any future ideas and thoughts about where my life should be headed. This has definitely given me lots of happiness and also a lot of peace to be honest, because it just shows that there's so much chaos in the world only because we create that ourselves.

The thought of all the things that can go wrong in your life, or the worries about what is going to happen in the future are so strong for most of the people I've met in my life, that I've come to understand how important it is to practice this "slow living lifestyle" in our current society.

The pressure we put onto ourselves by always being on the go, always being somewhere else with our focus and attention is so damaging for our wellbeing, that I truly believe it's necessary for everyone to just hit the "pause button" every day. Take a moment to really become aware of what your current state is. Sure, this is something most people try to achieve by meditating a couple of times a day, or even just every morning when they wake up. But I feel it's becoming more important to stop and reflect even more than we're currently doing.

The issue seems to be the time that we need to dedicate to ourselves, because we somehow feel the pressure from outsiders to continue doing what we always do and that keeps us in a cycle of stress. The anxiety that we can feel to perform or the stress that we experience from not knowing where we're going, can sometimes be too overwhelming.

No-one is actually pressuring you to do something you don't want to, but somehow you believe that others have a say in what you do. Whether it's your boss, your colleagues, your clients, your friends or your family, you always seem to feel that there's so much pressure from others to behave a certain way.

Time is no issue, but we somehow always make it one...
